Bitesize: Rebranding ‘Business Development’

‘I think the term “business development” should be rebranded as “relationship development”.

After all, relationship development is the essential stepping stone to business opportunities.

Telling someone to “do more business development” is confusing and can be intimidating.

Suggesting that they “develop more relationships”, on the other hand, is more tangible. That’s something we all have experience with.

Want to build a legal practice? Keep it simple. Continually improve your skills at the practice of law—that’s table stakes. From there, It’s mostly about building meaningful relationships.

Be helpful. 
Be curious.
Be generous. 

Invest in other people’s success. Business opportunities will result as a byproduct of that.’
