I am an attorney turned entrepreneur who is changing the legal industry through mentorship. I am a first-generation Asian-American lawyer. My parents are immigrants from Thailand and both engineers. During my years of practising law, I’ve learned how important it is to have good mentorship and sponsorship in your legal career. While I’ve been fortunate to have some wonderful and amazing mentors throughout my career, I realized that many others have not been so fortunate. Many students have no idea how to find a mentor, how to build a strong relationship with their mentor, or how important it is to have a mentor.
I didn’t know any lawyers personally when I decided to go to law school, so I tried to seek out advice from lawyers about what law school I should go to, what type of law I should practice, and what actual steps I needed to take to become a lawyer.
I cold-called over 50 lawyers to try to learn about their career paths. I only was able to connect with three lawyers, but luckily, one took me under his wing and became my mentor. He introduced me to dozens of other lawyers and helped me decide which law school to attend and what type of practice area to focus on. Over the years, I’ve mentored dozens of other young lawyers, law students, and prelaw students and I often find that I am their first mentor.
I realized that so many people don’t have access to mentorship at the very start of their law school journey, but that is arguably when they need it the most. So, I created a platform that could increase access to mentorship for people who are just starting out on their legal career journey. Check out our mentoring program at Leguplegal. Any attorney who is licensed to practice in the United States can join as a mentor.
